Native Woodland Border

In this backyard the client wanted to install a native garden, create some screening from neighbors, and wanted to compliment but also preserve her newly built retaining wall. We decided that a native woodland edge planting with varying heights would reach all her goals. Being mindful of the wall we started with shallow rooted ground covers. As we moved up the gentle slope and toward the patio we slowly built up the height of this narrow garden bed in layers. Plants included redbud, hawthorn, chokecherry, creeping phlox, fragrant sumac, and more…. (Pictured below are winter, spring, and summer the first year after planting.)
